Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins

This is by the same author who wrote “Hunger Games“. The back flap says that Collins wondered about a city version of “Alice in Wonderland” and the result is “Gregor the Overlander” This was another entertaining read. It is about a boy whose father disappeared and he has had to step into a role of responsibility so that his mother can work while he stays home with his little sister, Boots (who provides a spectacular amount of comic relief), and his grandma who is slipping into senility. Falling through a grate in the laundry room, this city born, modern “Alice” finds himself underground with two-year-old Boots in a world inhabited by Humans, giant talking cockroaches (who develop a fondness for Boots), Bats, Spiders, and Rats. The humans declare him to be the warrior of prophecy and give him renewed hope.
The theme of tolerance is very strong within this novel, as is hope. Very enjoyable and I’m glad that it is the beginning of a series.
