This book has everyone we love from the Percy Jackson and the Olympians Boxed Set(PJ) series. . . except Percy. Instead we have Jason. Jason finds himself part of the Camp Half Blood group but had been taken from an equivalent Roman camp (He and Percy were swapped), but has no memory prior to appearing on the bus. We’re introduced to the new trio, Jason, Piper (who Jason and Piper thought was dating but turns out that was just a trick of the Mist), and Leo. Each of them perform the roles of the original trio fulfills. Jason is the reluctant but capable hero (like Percy), Piper provides the romantic tension and down-to-earth practicality (like Annabeth, who also appears), and Leo is the comedic sidekick that has more depth and ability than people give him credit for (like Grover).
Other than the following the same formula as the first part of the PJ series (if it isn’t broke. . . ) I enjoyed the book. Lots of Roman gods in this sequel, which after awhile is hard to ignore and points to the fact that Jason is from a Roman equivalent of Camp Half-Blood (gasp!). I am hoping that the sequel to this provides at least some detail about Percy’s experience as Jason alludes that his camp mates aren’t as easy going as Half-Bloodians.
